  • Flash flood watch in effect

Earlier in the day, heavy rain from storms in the Chicago area overnight triggered a flash flood emergency in Lake County and northeastern McHenry County, north of Chicago, creating a hard and risky Wednesday morning commute.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga and Tompkins counties until 8 a.m. Thursday.

Heavy rain was indicated due to thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service, and may cause flooding in parts mainly from Miami Lakes to Weston.

Heat indexes are expected to reach 105 degrees in the Heat Index area, which extends southwest from La Salle County into western IL. Areas of the state hit hard today could be most susceptible to flooding as rain comes through tonight and Friday. That could mean more showers and some thunderstorms in a very wet atmosphere.

A flood warning was issued Wednesday morning for the Rock River at Afton south of Janesville, since the river reached flood stage at 9.0 feet by mid-morning.

Additional rainfall amounts up to an inch are possible in the warned area. The river was expected to go up another few inches before receding at night. High water and debris will affect the Mayer-Bolada Road and Pine Flat Road.

Thursday features a 30 percent chance for showers and storms before 1 p.m., mostly cloudy skies, with a high near 77 and northwest winds around 5 miles per hour.
