  • Canada wildfires force 14000 people from their homes

The 400-acre Jennings Fire broke out Tuesday afternoon off Interstate 8 and triggered an hours-long freeway closure.

By Wednesday, firefighters had contained 48 percent of the blaze, up from 25 percent a day earlier.

One of the reasons wild fires seem to be getting worse in B.C.is that fire crews have become so efficient at extinguishing the blazes over the past years, Daniels said.

Wildfires are burning in California, Nevada, Arizona, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Wilsey's home was far enough away that he didn't have to evacuate from the floods. Wilsey says he's keeping his trailer attached to his truck and telling his daughters to gather prized possessions they couldn't get the first time around. The fast-moving blaze destroyed one home and damaged another. "Most of those who have evacuated have not registered".

In northern California, a wildfire swept through grassy foothills in the Sierra Nevada and destroyed at least 10 structures and threatened more than 750 homes.

The extremely dry and highly flammable debris left behind from logging can fuel fires that burn hot and spread quickly, easily escaping initial attacks. USA 50 remained open and no structures have been damaged, the BLM said.

Cal Fire said Tuesday night that almost 5,000 Californians were still under evacuation orders. Cal Fire said fire crews' activity has reduced significantly as firefighters continued to improve fire line.

His daughter, Krystle Chambers, who lives on the same property, said the one-two punch of floods and fires was taking its toll.

Chief information officer Kevin Skrepnek said that they are expecting more hot weather, lightning and strong winds.

Glen Burgess of the BC Forest Service said he was optimistic about the progress made on the 150 Mile fire, particularly in the residential areas. Each has burned about 40 square miles (103 sq. kilometers). The fire burning in the Keystone area of Medicine Bow National Forest began July 3. Some residents have returned home. More homes were destroyed but fire officials have not had a chance to assess the damage.

In New Mexico, firefighters are mopping up a wildfire that sent up a tall plume of smoke from mountains overlooking Albuquerque late last week.

Firefighters have been battling some fires for a week, trying to stop them spreading towards populated areas.

"We are generation after generation that continue to live in a fire zone".

For the company's 100 Mile House location, local government authorities are managing the nearby fire, spokeswoman Hannah Seraphim said in an email, as staff and the local community have been evacuated. It's 15 percent contained.

There was minimal containment and flames shut down State Route 154, which is expected to remain closed for days.
