  • Hyperloop inches closer to reality successfully completes first full system test

Los Angeles-based Hyperloop One, one of the companies looking to bring Elon Musks's concept of a high-speed transportation system to life, said today that it has completed what it say is its first, full systems Hyperloop test in a vacuum environment.

Shortly after midnight May 12, Hyperloop guided a wheel-mounted sled 315 feet through a vacuum tube, reaching "nearly 2Gs of acceleration" and a top speed of 70 miles per hour as it traveled down a guideway for 5.3 seconds, the company said.

The Hyperloop, one of Elon Musk's many brainchildren, underwent its first private test in Nevada in May.

Hyperloop co-founder Shervin Pishevar called the test "our Kitty Hawk moment" in an interview with CBS News. "I'm entirely convinced we'll be seeing freight moved in a Hyperloop by 2020, maybe 2019 and our first passengers by 2021".

Josh Giegel, the co-founder of Hyperloop One, said: "We're looking forward to showcasing our technology and believe that Europe is the flawless region for one of the world's first Hyperloop systems". It did an open-air test in 2016 and then built the 11-ft diameter vacuum tube for tests in the spring of 2017. "Almost 200 engineers, fabricators, welders, etc. dedicated thousands of hours to make this test successful".

It was the first Hyperloop One test conducted in a full vacuum, using magnetic levitation to propel the pod. "Now that we've tested our Hyperloop system, we know it works, and we're ready to deploy it to the rest of the world".

In theory, it allows travel faster than the speed of sound.

"Our team is the only team that is actually making Hyperloop happen, and we've spent more time testing a Hyperloop system than anyone in the world", said Josh Giegel, co-founder and President of Engineering of Hyperloop One. Hyperloop One is building what could be the next mode of high-speed transportation. Using electromagnetic propulsion and mag-lev, the aerodynamic pod is 28 feet long and constructed of structural aluminum and carbon fiber.

Hyperloop One's main competitor Hyperloop Transportation Technologies also has its own 200-mile Hyperloop being built in South Korea. The company says that it will continue to run tests as it lengthens the track during Phase 2 testing.
