The poll found that 58 percent of right-leaning people (and 45 percent of people polled across the political spectrum) believe "colleges and universities have a negative effect on the country".
Pew Found little change in views of churches and religious organizations among Democrats and Republicans.
The findings mark a shift dramatic shift in Republicans' views of higher education, according to Pew.
Even Republicans with college degrees or more education are increasingly disapproving of colleges and universities. The two parties remain just as starkly divided on many other issues, including greater Republican support of banks and religious institutions and more Democratic support for labor unions.
A rather striking poll by Pew Research has just been released that reveals that only 55 percent of Americans think that colleges and universities "have a positive effect on the way things are going" in the US.
I'm guessing some of these negative views have to deal with the ideas that colleges are too "politically correct" or something.
The overall public viewpoint nearly exactly meets the middle of the two opposing political sides, with 55% believing that the colleges help the US. Now, 85% of Republicans describe the media as a negative influence, while Democrats are about evenly split: 44% see it as a positive, 46% as a negative.
The survey found that the partisan gap over the news media's impact on the country has grown over the past year. Since 2015, favorable views of colleges and universities have fallen 11 points among college-educated Republicans, to 33 percent, and 20 points to 37 percent among those without a degree. That ratio shifted to 43 percent positive and 45 percent negative a year ago. Forty-four percent of these Republicans view the institutions negatively today, down from 65 percent in 2015.
One institution that has been virtually unaffected by the political turmoil of the past year, according to the survey, is church.
The design of the survey allowed those responding to define "national news media" as they wished.
