  • Uran sprints to dramatic win after Porte and Thomas crash out

A very hard day on the mountains saw Froome need a bike change but recover to take a commanding lead in the Tour as Porte and Thomas crashed violently.

It was a thrilling finish to a remarkable stage, but the nasty crashes for Thomas and Porte took the shine off the day's racing. Briton Froome's four bonus seconds on the line helped him increase his lead to 18sec over Italian Fabio Aru, who moved up a place to second with Thomas having quit the race. Porte was given immediate medical assistance.

"He had a bit more fear than pain but for the moment it's reassuring as he was conscious and that's the most important thing", said Florence Pommerie, one of the Tour doctors.

"Definitely mixed feelings today", said Froome. I've just seen the images of Richie Porte's crash and that leaves you with a disgusting feeling. The Welshman sustained a suspected broken collarbone in a crash on the damp descent of the Col de la Biche, the first of three hors categorie climbs on a day expected to shake up the battle for the yellow jersey.

The two-times Tour victor Alberto Contador also hit the deck as he fell on the ascent of the Grand Colombier, but the Spaniard was quickly back on his way with a push from spectators.

Martin continued after Porte took him down, despite crashing a second time shortly afterwards.

"He probably doesn't want to think about it, he probably doesn't believe this thing's happened", said the Irishman.

The numerous crashes led some to question whether the stage was too risky.

One of the pre-race favourites, Porte came off his bike on the descent of Mont du Chat and was immediately treated on the side of the road before being carried into an ambulance on a stretcher.

"He (Porte) did it four times before the race, he did it in training, he did it in a race (the Criterium du Dauphine)".
