The three-time F1 world champion set new fastest-ever laps of the Red Bull Ring in both Friday sessions, ending the day a tenth and a half up on title rival Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari.

Formula One title contender Lewis Hamilton will have a five-place grid penalty for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix after his auto required an unscheduled gearbox change, Mercedes said on Friday. This track punishes you if you make a mistake. "It seems to be that we have good pace this weekend and, for sure, personally, I'm going out there tomorrow to fight for pole position, like many other guys". "But we'll see, today is Friday, it's hard to judge, the vehicle feels really good all around the lap".

The Spielberg track, nestled amid rolling hills and forests under the imposing Styrian Alps, was slippery and caused problems on Turns 1, 6 and 7.

Both Toro Rosso cars failed to finish P2. During the morning session, they were split by Max Verstappen - who had a couple of spins through the gravel and brushed the wall at one point.

Bottas also went into the gravel at much the same place as Alonso early into the afternoon's session, having spun his vehicle twice in the morning.

Valtteri Bottas finished third, 0.370s down on his teammate, in a session which saw him twice run off the circuit at Turn 1.

Great Britain's number one saw success in the second round to progress to the third for the first time in her career. "It's been one of my goals forever", she said.

Hamilton laid down the mother of all markers in FP1, topping Vettel's best time on supersoft tyres by nearly half a second, on the hardest compound available this weekend, softs.

Vettel was given a time penalty during that race but escaped further punishment from the FIA, motor sport's governing body, following a hearing on Monday (Tuesday NZT).

Vettel got closer in free practice two, but he still could not match the man closest to him in the drivers' championship.

Both said the matter is closed. "There is nothing more to comment on the topic".

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel was fourth, 0.449s off title rival Hamilton, and was one of the cars to spin early in the session after losing the rear of his vehicle on the Turn 1 apex.
