France announces plan to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles

  • France will 'ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040'

France aims to end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 and become carbon neutral 10 years later, Ecology Minister Nicolas Hulot said on Thursday at a presentation of measures to keep up momentum on the Paris climate agreement. He added that the target would apply pressure to France's vehicle manufacturers but said the companies now are engaged in projects that "can fulfill that promise".

French automakers Renault and PSA, the maker of Peugeot and Citroen cars, are both partially owned by the state. Households in France with lower incomes will be given a premium so they'll be able to bid adieu to vehicles running on fossil fuels for cleaner options.

He cited the example of a "European maker" which had already made a decision to take the plunge. Though as we explained, Volvo is not getting rid of its gas-powered cars, they only said that they will be adding electric powertrains, hybrid and all-electric, to all their new auto models starting in 2019. They are planning to stop using coal to produce electricity by 2022, although they've also said they plan to reduce their reliance on nuclear from 75 percent of the country's energy to 50 percent by 2025.

Germany wants everyone to benefit from economic progress rather than only a few, she said. The two-day meeting is of particular significance as the U.S.

From 2040, France says it will ban sales of petrol and diesel vehicles.

Hulot, a former journalist and environmental activist, was newly appointed at the Minister of Ecological and Solidary Transition by the new French President Emmanuel Macron. France is the biggest manufacturer of electric cars sold in Europe. Norway - where electric cars topped the sales charts for the first time last month - aims to end sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2025 and auto giant Germany wants to put one million electric vehicles on the road by 2020. Germany wants to do away with 100 per cent combustion-powered vehicles by 2030, as does India. How the ban will be implemented, and whether it includes a ban on hybrid cars is still to be announced.

Just 0.6% of new auto registrations across the European Union past year were for pure electric vehicles, compared with 1.1% of new cars sold in France.
