Arab ministers in Cairo agree to maintain boycott of Qatar

  • Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed Al Thani

Saudi-led group of four Arab countries will keep its blockade on neighbor Qatar.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, on a tour of Gulf countries, said he was cautiously optimistic that the feuding countries would reach a solution once they met for talks.

Their demands included that drastically limit its collaboration with the Iranian Regime, align with the rest of the Arab World, remove Turkish troops from Qatar, end contact with terror groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and submit to monthly external compliance checks for a period of 10 years. "We find it did not provide a basis for Qatar to retreat from its policies", Shoukry said, adding that Doha's "position reflects a failure to realize the gravity of the situation".

Qatar Petroleum has also said it "mobilised all available resources" to mitigate any actions that could disrupt supplies.

The Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, told reporters that further steps against Qatar would be taken at the appropriate time and will be in line with global law.

Qatar's Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was received by Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah on Monday to hand over a letter from Qatar's emir, according to state-run Kuwait News Agency.

Qatar is already the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Fireworks blamed for Boone County house fire
The home's resident told investigators he was awakened by banging on his front door and someone yelling the house was on fire. Hersheypark apologized for the cancellation, and the town thanked its fire department for containing the fire so quickly.

Qatar Airways said in a statement early on Thursday the ban had been lifted after the airline and its hub airport Hamad International met with all new USA security requirements.

Qatar's response showed a "lack of seriousness" in dealing with the crisis, according to a joint statement by foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt. Qatar has denied the allegations.

Asked if shutting down Al Jazeera continued to be a precondition by the quartet to ending the boycott, Shoukry said: "I'm not going to comment directly on the specificities of the demands, but I will note that the Qatari government has potentially distorted many of them to try to extract sympathy or support from various organizations".

The credit ratings agency Moody's warned early Wednesday that it had set Qatar's economic outlook to negative over the crisis.

The foreign ministers said they would meet again soon in the Bahraini capital, Manama, but gave no date.

State-owned Qatar Petroleum said it would go ahead with the output boost regardless of whether or not Saudi Arabia and its allies maintain a sweeping embargo they imposed last month. He said Kuwait's mediation, backed by the United States, had already achieved a lot.

Only days after US President Donald Trump had visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar was handed a list of demands that looked more like a punishment for its wrong policy than a way to solve problems.
