  • Microsoft to lay off thousands of employees worldwide to restructure its sales force

Microsoft, the Redmond-headquartered tech giant, may soon lay off thousands of employees as the company looks to turn to automation for higher productivity standards. The restructuring will also include an organizational merger of its enterprise customer unit with its one or more SME-focused divisions. And an article in Bloomberg Friday citing "people familiar with the matter" said the changes would affect Microsoft's Worldwide Commercial Business and the global sales and marketing group. The magnitude of the potential layoffs is unclear, but the WSJ says they will likely occur in offices all around the globe. The Enterprise Operating Unit will work with Microsoft's Marketing and Operations, previously announced One Commercial Partner, Enterprise Services and Commercial Software Engineering teams. Most of the company's sales force is more used to selling software for personal computers and servers, but Microsoft's new strategy places more priority on convincing customers to buy cloud services hosted in its data centers.

The reorganization will shift the sales team's focus to the software maker's cloud business which has been thriving in the recent years.

Microsoft's rumored reorganization has been making waves for some time now.

More than just a name change and new targets, Microsoft is looking to put more focus on vertical targets that have seemingly be grossly under supported by the company.

Microsoft is reportedly planning massive layoffs, set to announce thousands of job cuts this week in a bid to restructure its salesforce.

The impending shake-up may be the result of executive changes within the past year.

Either way, it's not the first time Microsoft has cleared the decks.

Foley added that Altoff has been focused on getting Microsoft's sales teams to prioritize selling Azure and other cloud services. "From large multinationals to small and medium businesses to non-profits all over the world, organizations are using Microsoft's cloud platforms to power their digital transformation", Chief Executive Satya Nadella had earlier said.
