Details of Microsoft's massive new sales reorg emerge

Microsoft, the Redmond-headquartered tech giant, may soon lay off thousands of employees as the company looks to turn to automation for higher productivity standards. The restructuring will also include an organizational merger of its enterprise customer unit with its one or more SME-focused divisions. And an article in Bloomberg Friday citing "people familiar with the matter" said the changes would affect Microsoft's Worldwide Commercial Business and the global sales and marketing group. The magnitude of the potential layoffs is unclear, but the WSJsays they will likely occur in offices all around the globe. The Enterprise Operating Unit will work with Microsoft's Marketing and Operations, previously announced One Commercial Partner, Enterprise Services and Commercial Software Engineering teams. Most of the company's sales force is more used to selling software for personal computers and servers, but Microsoft's new strategy places more priority on convincing customers to buy cloud services hosted in its data centers.
The reorganization will shift the sales team's focus to the software maker's cloud business which has been thriving in the recent years.

More than just a name change and new targets, Microsoft is looking to put more focus on vertical targets that have seemingly be grossly under supported by the company.
