In March, the US banned the use of electronics in cabin on flights from 10 cities in 8 countries, primarily in the Middle East and North Africa.

Passengers flying from Abu Dhabi to the United States can now take electronic devices into the cabin, rather than having to stow them in their checked luggage.

The US-imposed restrictions affected flights to and from 10 airports in eight majority-Muslim countries, and were prompted by fears that larger devices could be used to hide bombs.

The move makes Abu Dhabi the only airport in the region to have new stringent security measures in place, and gives Etihad a competitive advantage over other carriers, at least until more airports beef up their security.

Now Emirates is working to implement extra security measures of its own in a bid to acquire a laptop ban exemption too.

Etihad Aviation Group applauded the decision.

Under the new rule, which took effect immediately on Sunday, the passengers travelling to the United States by Etihad Airways flights are allowed to carry all laptops, tablets and other electronic devices onboard, though they will "be subject to enhanced inspection and inspection procedures".

Etihad welcomed the decision on Sunday and credited a facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport where passengers clear USA immigration before they land in the USA for "superior security advantages" that had allowed it to satisfy requirements.

Etihad is the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates and it had begun conducting more passengers heading for the United States and screening at the Abu Dhabi International Airport itself.

Last week, the United States government imposed broad new demands for increased airport security on flights to America from other countries in an attempt to combat the threat of terrorists hiding bombs in laptops.

"When guests land in the United States, they arrive as domestic passengers with no requirement to queue for immigration and custom checks again", it added, saying the facility was the only one of its kind in the region.

Homeland Security had imposed the laptop ban in March and passengers from some majority-Muslim nations proceeding to the United States were not allowed to carry electronic items larger than cellphones as cabin luggage.

Saj Ahmad, an analyst with the London-based StrategicAero Research, said that he believed that Emirates will eventually succeed in getting the electronics ban removed on its flights.
