Emmett Till Sign Vandalized Again

  • Historical Marker of Civil-Rights Icon Emmett Till Vandalized in Mississippi

A Mississippi Freedom Trail sign in Money, where 14-year-old Till was kidnapped and killed in 1955, had large parts of its text and photos scraped off by Monday morning.

Twitter users denounced the vandals and tried to blame Trump, although some of the vandalism occurred before Trump took office.

Hammons told the AP the sign has been vandalized as recently as May, when it was "scratched with a blunt tool".

Hammons said it is unknown if the vandalism was racially motivated or just a random crime.

The sign, located outside the grocery store where 14-year-old black teenager Till was accused of whistling at a white woman in 1955, is missing vinyl panels that contained photos and words about him. "Vandals have been around since the beginning of time".

Till lived in Chicago and was in MS for the summer visiting relatives when he was killed.

New Lawsuit Against Trump Accepting Foreign Income
Legal scholars who have addressed the emoluments clauses as they pertain to President Trump have mixed opinions. It alleges Trump is violating the Constitution by taking payments from foreign governments while president.

After his disfigured body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River, his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, transported his remains back to Chicago and held an open casket funeral for the world to see. The teenager was later kidnapped, beaten and killed for allegedly offending Bryant.

Last year, the sign marking the site of the teen's death was found riddled with bullet holes.

The two men were ultimately acquitted of Till's kidnapping and murder by an all-white jury.

Till's death was a pivotal moment in the rise of the civil rights movement.

Hammons said the Freedom Trail marker in Money cost more than $8,000, and repairs will cost at least $500. In 2008, Till's accuser told Timothy Tyson, a Duke University professor who wrote the book "The Blood of Emmett Till", that she fabricated significant portions of her story about her interaction with Till. But students from St. Louis tried to fix the sign by adding their own drawings and writings about Till, reports The Clarion-Ledger. "It's not a defacing, but an erasing", the Emmett Till Memory Project's Davis Houck told The Jackson Clarion-Ledger of the latest incident.
