Weekend Box Office Report: 'Cars 3' Drives Away With First Place

Pixar/Disney rode their newest offering, Cars 3, to the top of the box office this week with $53.5 million, pushing the juggernaut Wonder Woman to second place.

The third part of the "Cars" franchise opened to an estimated 53.5 million Dollars from 4,256 theaters. "All Eyez on Me", the Tupac Shakur biopic from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., opened to $27 million to place third.

This weekend there were quite a few films battling at the box office, which released on 16 June.

The Cars films are far from Disney and Pixar's highest earners, but Cars 3 is another example that even a decent opening for the duo is a victory in the big picture. "Cars 2" collected 34.1 percent of its overall box office domestically, down from 52.8 percent for the 2006 original. He enlists the help of a young race technician (voice of Cristela Alonzo) to help him get back in the game.

After two weeks at the top, Wonder Woman managed an impressive $40 million for its third weekend for a U.S. total of $275 million and counting.

In third place was newcomer All Eyez on Me. The film had been expected to generate $21.8 million, according to Hollywood Stock Exchange. Titled after Shakur's 1996 fourth studio album of the same name, the film stars Demetrius Shipp Jr.as Shakur and Kat Graham, Lauren Cohan, Hill Harper, and Danai Gurira in supporting roles.

Rounding out the top five were The Mummy, and Mandy Moore and Claire Holt's new film 47 Meters Down, grossing $13.9 million and $11 million, respectively. Sony's R-rated bachelorette party gone wrong pic earned only $8.1 million against a $20 million budget.
