  • Renewables in Asia: Opportunities and Challenges

Bloomberg New Energy Finance is out with its New Energy Outlook, the annual assessment of the changing energy sector. By 2020, the country will have installed an additional 200 GW of wind power and 120 GW of solar, plus around 340 GW of hydropower and 58 GW worth of nuclear reactors.

Policy support: governments in the region increasingly wish to decarbonize their power sectors and are putting in place renewable energy targets.

And while this work has been widely promoted and cited, the assumption that we can reach this level of renewable energy deployment in a cost-effective manner may simply be too good to be true. That share is forecast to grow steadily over the next 20 years.

Two weeks ago, the English power grid set a new record in renewable energy production, with over half of its electricity coming from those sources.

People seem to think that not only will renewables singlehandedly clean up our climate, but they'll also make energy totally free.

"We definitely have installed more wind and solar over the past year", he said.

The analysis also found that greater diversity of technologies made the system more reliable.

Grenfell Tower cladding is banned in UK, Government says
He said "we have never said we won't raise some taxes", but added that overall the government wanted to keep them low. Mr Hammond said his role in the campaign had not been the "one I would have liked it to be".

By putting solar energy systems in high-profile public spaces, Solar Now aims to spark a conversation about how Vancouverites can benefit from switching from fossil fuels to solar-powered electricity.

Coal India, which accounts for over 80 per cent of the India's coal production, produced an average of 1.42 tonnes of coal per day in June past year. An example is Japan, where efforts to stimulate growth in renewables following the Fukushima nuclear disaster have led to such a large volume of solar PV projects being launched that their output has exceeded the capacity of the grid, leading the government to revise regulations and causing some utilities to refuse new interconnections and to curtail output from existing plants without compensation. By 2015, that number had climbed to more than 14%. The report, which looks at how fuel and electricity markets will evolve by 2040, estimates that renewable energy is taking hold globally faster than many energy experts believe.

This country got a lot of attention past year when it was reported that almost 100% of the country's energy demand was covered by renewables for part of a day.

The numbers bounce up and down throughout the year, with the percentage of non-hydroelectric renewables in 2016 ending up at 7%.

The biggest challenge facing all these countries, and the industry as a whole, is price.

Meanwhile, solar panel manufacturers in the USA are pushing to impose trade penalties on imports from regions like China, potentially creating a new trade case for President Donald Trump. That's why, for now at least, natural gas will continue to dominate the global energy mix.

"'Energy Choice" is politics for fossil fuels in fight against solar power - Nevada Governor notes "Energy Choice" as part of his logic for vetoing an increase in clean energy for the state.
