Cuba rejects new US policy, saying pressure will not work

Despite claiming to be canceling the deal "effective immediately", at the end of the speech Trump signed a presidential directive that the Commerce and Treasury departments begin drawing up changes to the Obama administration's most recent regulations within 30 days.

Former President Barack Obama opened up relations between the United States and Cuba after about 5 decades of embargo but now President Trump will roll back some of the steps Obama took.

His critics, however, have questioned why his administration is now singling out Cuba for human rights abuses but downplaying the issue in other parts of the world, including Saudi Arabia, a close US ally Trump visited last month where political parties and protests are banned.

"We reaffirm Cuba's intention to continue respectful dialogue and cooperation in the field of mutual interests, to discuss bilateral relations with the United States on the basis of equality and absolute respect for our sovereignty and our independence", Parrilla said.

Noting Trump's speech "laden with hostile rhetoric", Cuba said the events in Miami on Friday constituted a "step backwards in the relations between the two countries".

The United States are not in the position to teach us lessons.

The Cuban government response was restrained. Rather, the threat of these sanctions between connected economies is more likely to drive changes in government behavior.

"It is doubtful that they will trigger any move in Cuba towards a new governing structure or new leadership", said Shifter.

Wind howling as final round at Erin Hills gets under way
Fleetwood began the day in a tie for second and made an encouraging start with a birdie from eight feet on the second. What truly stands out at Erin Hills is the site from the eighteenth tee, affectionately called, "Holy Hill".

Ramon Saul Sanchez, leader of the anti-embargo Movimiento Democracia, said the changes did not fully reverse Mr. Obama's open-hand policy as Mr. Trump had suggested.

Reversing history's wheel, taking up a policy again, which former president Barack Obama labeled a failure and a holdover of the Cold War, is not a smart thing to do, by any means.

As a result, the changes - though far-reaching - appear to be less sweeping than many U.S.pro-engagement advocates had feared.

Still, Rodriguez said, the Cuban government had no intention of meeting Trump's demands, including extraditing US fugitives from justice, like convicted cop killer Assata Shakur. Poor relations with Western hemispheric allies will make addressing regional challenges that much more hard for the United States. Including agricultural exports, the US stands to lose 14,500 jobs and $8.1 billion in revenue. "You kept your promise; you stand in solidarity with the Cuban people and freedom-loving people everywhere; and you are putting American values and US national security interests first", he said. According to the Pew Research Center, a growing number of Americans (nearly 75% in December 2016) support improved USA relations with Cuba.

It is also wrong for some to criticize Trump's rollback as an opportunity for China and Russian Federation to increase influence in Cuba. No. However, the majority of Cuban-Americans support rapprochement. How many Americans will be put out of work by this foolish political stunt?

Rubio and other critics of Obama argue that, in lifting the embargo, we have given too much to Cuban President Raul Castro and are receiving far less in return.

The State Department - which saw over 99 percent of campaign contributions go to Trump's electoral opponent in Hillary Clinton - is not only embedded wholly with leftists (who are nearly impossible to fire, due to an unreformed civil service), but with individuals that appear to be loyal to the past president.
