  • Justin Thomas of the United States reacts after making a birdie on the 17th green during the third round of the 2017 US Open at Erin Hills

Staying that deep into the red might not prove as easy.

It marked the first time since the world rankings were created in 1986 that the top three ranked players in the world missed the cut at a U.S. Open.

Elsewhere, American Justin Thomas capped a record-setting third round with a sensational eagle at the last, moving closer to adding a maiden major title to an already glorious season of golf. He also played in the U.S. Open past year at Oakmont and missed the cut.

Casey said he would not change his approach as he pursues his first major in his 53rd attempt.

AMERICAN Brian Harman has taken a dramatic third round by the scruff of the neck to lead the US Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.

This isn't like most Opens. Paul Casey had a miserable time at Erin Hills on Saturday. Majority had to come from far back going into the weekend, and it was hard to put together two good rounds.

The three other golfers that find themselves 10 under through 54 holes include Brooks Koepka (-11), Tommy Fleetwood (-11) and Rickie Fowler (-10).

If the winds hold, it could well mean that the final afternoon leaderboard battle comes down to who masters the conditions.

With only eight shots separating top to bottom going into the weekend, someone from way back has a chance to make up ground in a hurry.

Macron 'set for parliamentary majority'
In a televised speech, LREM president Catherine Barbaroux said "the magnitude of this new majority is an opportunity for France ". Before voting closed, pollsters had predicted LREM to win between 400 and 470 seats in parliament.

There's a few unfamiliar names towards the top of the 2017 U.S. Open leaderboard. And he wasn't through. Koepka had the outright lead with four holes left in his round before a bogey on the par-3 sixth hole.

Morgan shot 77 and, remarkably, still had the lead at 4-under 212. Tom Kite won his only major. Jordan Spieth was even par through 12 holes and going nowhere. He still built a six-shot lead through 36 holes, despite hitting his tee shot into the ocean on the 18th hole and salvaging bogey. No one had a chance. He made four birdies over the last six holes to salvage a 71, but he still missed the cut for the second straight year.

They've come not just to help but to be part of the U.S. Open.

That's what happened as Stricker made it exactly on the cut line. He was 10 under, only two shots behind.

Casey discovered how little it takes to make a big number in the U.S. Open - and at this U.S. Open, how a recovery is never too far away. Furyk closed with a 72. Champ is 3 over in the final round with two holes to play. "So you've got to minimize those mistakes, minimize those bogies". Thomas capped off his record day on the 667-yard 18th hole with the prettiest 3-wood he ever hit, stopping 8 feet away on a green where some players struggled to land a wedge.

Day, needing a miracle to get back into contention after his opening 79 carded a three-over-par 75, leaving him 10 over.

Nearly an inch of rain fell on the course overnight and Reed, who beat Rory McIlroy in the opening singles at Hazeltine a year ago, was one of many players to take advantage in pursuit of his first major title. A mere hiccup. On Saturday, he got to 14 under, then on Sunday, he widened the gap versus par to 16 under.

"This week I've been working with my coach, just sitting there and thinking, all right, let's go out and try to make a good golf swing and try to make a good putt". The tournament was never really in doubt after that, though the wind arrived and Kaymer couldn't maintain the pace.

Earlier, Thomas mixed nine birdies and two bogeys before hitting his second shot to six feet on the par-5 18th and tapped in for eagle to record the lowest round (nine under) in relation to par in US Open history.
