The American Cancer Society's website notes, "Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser cancer walk for the American Cancer Society". Luminaries can be purchased at the relay up until the luminary lighting ceremony.

The luminary lighting will take place at dusk.

"But we still have a steady group of volunteers and we are just hoping to bring more people in", Zabala said.

After several months of planning and fundraising, the Franklin County annual Relay For Life will kick off Friday night.

"To take part in the Survivor's lap that first year and each year since was and continues to be the most wonderful, emotional, celebratory and humbling thing and it's an honour to do it", she continued.

Carson City Administrator Jean Southward tells her story of overcoming breast cancer during the inaugural Relay for Life of Carson City-Crystal event Friday evening at Community Field in Carson City.

This baseball themed event, to celebrate the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series, will feature everything baseball. All cancer survivors and caregivers are invited.

Organizers planned a variety of special activities, ceremonies, entertainment and lap themes that focus on the overall Relay for Life of Jefferson County's theme - "Cancer never takes a holiday".

Food, activities and other items will be for sale by teams at their campsites to help raise donations for the event's goal.

The relay also will include a cancer survivor luncheon, ceremony and luminaria ceremony. She said seeing the survivors at the Relay is a reminder to celebrate.

Relay teams will have breakfast available for participants, family and friends for a donation on Saturday morning. "We're excited about this year's event, and we're just thankful for all the support".

Three years later and she is cancer free, supported along the way by the positive spirit promoted by Cancer Research's Relay for Life. Funds also support patients through services such as free transportation to and from treatment, free wigs and other support.

"We're hoping a lot of families - who normally wouldn't go to relay - will come out on Saturday (June 24)", said Catina Struble of Bloomington, the Relay event lead.
