Britain-EU Brexit talks to start Monday as planned

  • Why history says Theresa May should go

Mrs May chaired her first full Cabinet meeting this morning as Conservative party chiefs urged MPs to rally behind her to avoid a civil war over Brexit after her dismal election campaign left them short of an overall Commons majority.

Nobel-prize victor Lord Trimble, former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, said suggestions the DUP-Tory talks would jeopardise the Good Friday Agreement were "silly" and "scaremongering".

But May's predecessor, David Cameron, said there would be pressure after last week's surprise for a "softer" Brexit that gave greater priority to a close trading deal with the EU.

"I think it is all very doable".

Media reports suggested an agreement could be delayed into next week, but the spokesman said: "I certainly have heard nothing on this side to indicate that".

The London fire, which claimed at least 17 lives, forced the cancellation of the City of London's Mansion House dinner, where May's finance minister, Philip Hammond, had the chance to revive calls for a more business-friendly exit from the EU.

"We have worked as a party with the DUP before and those are productive talks".

Before joining French President Emmanuel Macron to watch England get beaten 3-2 by France in Paris, she insisted she will not need extra time to negotiate Brexit.

Full negotiations had been due to start on June 19, but Brussels said the date was still not confirmed after British Prime Minister Theresa May unexpectedly lost her majority in parliament.

The unprecedented negotiations come nearly exactly a year after Britons voted last June 23 to leave the EU.

Winterstein said the commission was "quite confident" that so-called technical talks to pave the way for the Barnier-Davis negotiations could begin as early as this week.

"The only thing I know is that there is an Article 50 request and we have been preparing ourselves for a long time to start negotiations on that basis".

Among these was whether Britain's position would "be the same as in the letter of March 29" when May triggered the two-year Brexit countdown.

"It's passing quicker than anyone believes. We are ready as soon as the United Kingdom itself is ready".

Speaking as he arrived for a meeting of European Union finance ministers in Luxembourg, he said: "As we go into that negotiation, my clear view - and I believe the view of the majority of people in Britain - is that we should prioritise protecting jobs, protecting economic growth and protecting prosperity as we enter those negotiations and take them forward".

Barnier dismissed the suggestion of postponing the negotiations and said such a delay would only prompt further instability.

A spokesman for his Department for Exiting the European Union said Britain had been "crystal clear" about its approach.

Northern Ireland's frontier with the Republic of Ireland will be the UK's only land border with the European Union after Brexit.

They would not form a coalition.

Though on the surface, Thursday's meetings with Northern Irish parties were aimed at breaking the logjam in forming a new cross-party regional government in the province, May needs broader acceptance in the province of a Conservative-DUP deal.

Restoring devolved government in Belfast could protect Northern Ireland "from the worst effects of that arrangement", she said.

"The danger is that however much any government tries they will not be seen to be impartial if they are locked into a parliamentary deal", 1990s Conservative prime minister John Major told BBC radio.

Sinn Féin's delegation today will be led by Gerry Adams, with the party's leader in the North Michelle O'Neill also set to attend.

"This new arrangement is very unsettling and people are concerned and anxious about what it may mean", Sinn Fein MP Michelle Glidernew told AFP.
