Polls to open for primary elections across Virginia

  • Polls to open for primary elections across Virginia

Gillespie, in comparison, has hedged on whether he supports the president or would want his help in November - a clear general election strategy for a purple state that's increasingly trended blue in statewide contests.

For Democrats, the race had been framed as a reboot of the Bernie Sanders-Hillary Clinton contest. Northam faces a primary against former Rep. Tom Perriello.

Gillespie is endorsed by a raft of state and national Republican leaders.

It hasn't been easy. Also seeking the nomination are Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and Donald Trump's Virginia campaign chairman, and state Sen.

Continue watching as election results come in across the state. There is a late online survey from a new polling firm showing Stewart running even with - and in some turnout scenarios ahead of - Gillespie, which Breitbart News is touting. Gillespie, who has led in almost every poll since announcing his campaign previous year, has taken a more calculated approach toward Trump, tepidly offering support for controversial positions like the immigration ban while keeping a distance for much of the campaign. A third candidate, state Sen. Ron Villanueva of Virginia Beach, chairman of the House transportation committee.

In Virginia, tomorrow is a primary election day.

The weekend airwaves were filled with messages promoting the candidates for the other two offices, and how much you heard about the respective office-seekers may well be a function of the monetary support they have garnered to date.

That will be especially important for Perriello, who is counting on a wave of Democratic enthusiasm and is running without the benefit of the party infrastructure.

DAVIS: "As far as policies that set us apart, I've actually got tax reform policies that I've passed and also some that I've already put together on my website that get rid of double taxation policies on Virginia businesses that are driving jobs and businesses away from Virginia to North Carolina, D.C. and then Maryland".

Just a few days remain until the June 13 primary, and candidates are making their final pitches for votes. Absentee ballot applications are up significantly as compared to previous gubernatorial elections, which could indicate a higher than usual overall turnout.

Months before his opponent even entered the race, Northam sewed up everything that usually decides intra-left state primaries - the endorsements of all of Virginia's major Democratic officials, backing from the state's biggest donors, and the support of its most powerful interest groups.

Northam received endorsements early on from almost every top Democrat in the state, including McAuliffe and U.S. Sens.

In the lieutenant governor general, Vogel will match-up with Democrat Justin Fairfax, who comfortably secured his party's nomination over two challengers. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen.

His backers are hoping he will break Democrats' winning streak, which has seen them win every U.S. Senate election since 2006, claim the state's Electoral College votes in the last three presidential contests and sweep all three top state offices in 2013.

The 51st House District has a contest for the Democratic Party nomination to challenge Republican Rich Anderson.

Democrats have seen a surge in candidates for the House of Delegates this year, where they have a longshot at taking back control of the chamber from Republicans in November. That was, of course, after the primary, but there is no sign Gillespie will be in search in the same kind of lift from Washington in 2017.
