Friday, a man in Colorado said his son's life was saved after seeing 4-year-old Frankie Delgado's tragic story on KTRK-TV, ABC7's sister station.

The tragic, startling effects of "dry drowning" took the life of a 4-year-old boy in Texas a week after he went swimming.

Francisco Delgado III reportedly began showing odd symptoms after swimming at the dike over Memorial Day weekend, but his parents didn't initially think anything of it. When the air passages in the lungs are filled with water, they are unable to exchange oxygen to and from the blood, causing blood oxygen levels to drop and the heart to slow.

Fitz said dry drowning most commonly occurs in young children.

Unlike deaths that happened in pools, lakes and at the beach, dry drowning can occur hours, even days, after a person inhales water.

Symptoms reportedly include vomiting, trouble breathing, coughing and fatigue.

One of the most recent cases of dry drowning is out of Texas.

Grover said dry drowning is rare, but it's best to be overcautious since dry drownings are unsafe when they do occur.

He woke a few hours later complaining of serious pain: 'Out of nowhere, he just woke up.

Frankie's mother, Tara, said paramedics and doctors made attempts to save her son. "He said ahhhh", his father, Francisco Delgado Jr., told KTRK.

His parents say the four-year-old was briefly knocked over by a wave while playing in shallow water but got back up and kept playing.

Grover said that kids can begin showing symptoms of dry drowning 24 to 48 hours after ingesting water. Dr. James Orlowski, a pediatrician at Florida Hospital Tampa, told WebMD that dry drowning and secondary drowning, a similar condition, make up about 1-2 percent of all drowning incidents.

According to Dr. Mitchell, dry drowning happens when water causes a spasm in the airway.

"This smaller percentage, while rare, is really scary because the symptoms can be delayed", Dr. Mark Zonfrillo, from the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, told in a previous interview.

The family is "heartbroken" over "Baby Frankie's" death, according to a GoFundMe page set up to pay for the little boy's funeral. The world lost a handsome soul, ' a statement on the page reads.
