Time Warner's 'Wonder Woman' Jump-Starts Summer Box Office, Female Superhero Genre

Wonder Woman is in theaters now.

Wonder Woman closes out its opening weekend with $100.5 million in domestic ticket sales, according to Warner Bros. projections. From perfectly chiding "its male mudslingers with humor and grace" in the script to offering a women-only screening of the film in spite of male critics, "Wonder Woman" stands as an emblem of female empowerment.

But that isn't even my favorite part, no, the best line is when guest Dion Baia-who according to his Twitter bio is a writer, actor, podcaster, and frequent contributor to Your World-jumps in to add, "I think, nowadays, sadly, money trumps patriotism".

In summer 2013, Superman reboot Man of Steel, the first title in the new DC Extended Universe, opened to $116.6 million domestically, although both that film and the follow-up Batman v. Superman were snubbed by critics.

Director Patty Jenkins now holds the record among female filmmakers for the most lucrative opening weekend ever.

While the opening weekend for "Wonder Woman" is impressive, DC Comics movies have scored more in the past - recently "Batman v Superman" and "Suicide Squad" rocketed to $166 million and $134 million openings respectively.

Ariana Grande leads 'night of love' at Manchester benefit concert
While a fourth lamented: "Can't believe Will.I.Am walked on stage and said hi London how could he get that one wrong". The Manchester native took the stage with Coldplay's Chris Martin to perform Oasis' hit " Live Forever ".

Next weekend, "Wonder Woman" will have to battle "The Mummy".

The times, or rather Hollywood's pathetic attempt at catching up to them, also help contribute to Wonder Woman's success. "I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of Diana [Prince] on the big screen".

Coming in at No. 2 is "Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie".

The success of "Wonder Woman" gave the summer box office a much-needed charge.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, starring Johnny Depp, Brenton Thwaites, Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, and Orlando Bloom, took the third spot with an additional $21.6 million, for a domestic total of $114.6 million so far. The film made just $219 million on a budget of $200 million, making it a costly flop and prompting the studio to cancel the plans for the sequel.

"Wonder Woman", though, pushed the week's box office up 30 percent over the same week previous year, according to comScore.
