SEC schools will now only receive a one-year ban on accepting graduate transfers if a previous transfer doesn't meet academic requirements.

That means MI could face the former Notre Dame quarterback in its September 2 season opener in Arlington. The Gators had been unable to add Zaire because two previous graduate transfers - linebacker Anthony Harrell and offensive lineman Mason Halter - failed to meet academic requirements after transferring to Florida in 2016.

According to several reports last week, Zaire had decided he wanted to become a Gator, but that decision could not become official unless the SEC altered its graduate transfer rule.

That ease of restrictions could impact Florida immediately.

The SEC has also eliminated the requirement that graduate transfers must complete all possible April points at a previous college before enrolling in an SEC institution.

Florida head coach Jim McElwain, who stands to gain the most in the short term, was fairly indifferent about it when asked about it earlier in the week. The old rule had included a three-year ban.

Both the Felicity actors were in town for Russell's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony earlier that same day. He added, "It was a Chia-Head sort of vibe to it ... but it grew into something great".

Both Zaire and DeShone Kizer played in Notre Dame's loss to Texas in last year's season opener, as coach Brian Kelly always has been open to using multiple quarterbacks and was trying to find a permanent starter. In parts of three seasons with the Fighting Irish, Zaire threw for 816 yards with six passing touchdowns.

The SEC tweaked its graduate transfer policy Friday, June 2, 2017, making changes that would allow former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire to land at Florida.

"That's based on the knowledge that there's opportunity for institutions to request waivers now under our current approach", Sankey said.

Sankey said it is in the SEC's interest to see what the NCAA's task force finds before voting one way or the other.

"I think we have to learn more", he said. The league stepped in and granted Smith to a waiver to transfer to Georgia. "There's a lot that remains to be done".
