Clarke is perhaps best known for his very critical - and controversial - comments on Black Lives Matter and has been a vocal supporter of Trump during the presidential election. He's also repeatedly called Black Lives Matter a terrorist organization and frequently refers to the activist group as "Black Lies Matter". Most recently, corrections officers were blamed for the dehydration death of Terrill Thomas.
His announcement comes just a month after a grand jury recommended charges against several staff members at one of Clarke's Milwaukee jails, where an inmate with bipolar disorder died after he was deprived of water for a week. Walker's office said the application process for interested applicants will last for about two weeks, followed by interviews.
Republican Gov. Scott Walker would be responsible for appointing someone to serve the remainder of Clarke's term, which runs through 2018.
Tom Evenson, spokesman for Walker, said his office had not yet received a formal resignation letter from Clarke.
The announcement was met with a flurry of criticism: Clarke, who is staunchly conservative, said earlier this year that the only time he would reach across the aisle would be to grab a Democrat "by the throat".
