Mr Trump fired Mr Comey on Tuesday, later saying that "he wasn't doing a good job".

Some suggested that Comey was sacked because of an investigation into Russian hackers' alleged interference in the U.S. election, which some Democrats allege contributed to Trump's victory in last year's presidential election.

The White House says Trump asked his lawyers for a letter following a request from Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC, who heads one of the congressional committees investigating Russia's interference in last year's election.

Trump maintains Comey told him that he was not under investigation, but McCabe suggested under questioning that was highly improbable.

He added, "The Fake Media is working overtime today!"

He said in an NBC News interview on Thursday that Mr Comey told him once over dinner and twice by telephone that he is not under investigation.

Trump fired Comey based on the recommendation of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Merrick Garland To Remain A Judge; Won't Be FBI Director
Trump has said a decision could come before he leaves Friday for the Mideast and Europe, his first overseas trip as president. I read the Washington Post story, and I read General McMaster's response, which tends to refute the story-rebut the story.

Trump took to Twitter on Friday to blame his "active" presidency for any inaccuracies that his surrogates make at the podium.

He added, "Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???"

U.S. President Donald Trump said he could announce a replacement for FBI Director James Comey by May 19, when he is due to begin his first overseas trip as president.

On May 10, she claimed that before the meeting with representatives of the Department of Justice Trump did not plan to fire Comey.

White House press statements, though, are creating confusion regarding the timeline of Comey's firing within the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The New York Times reported that Comey slammed similar statements as unrealistic, and that during a conversation with his assistants he allegedly described Trump as "an outside the realm of normal" and "crazy".
