Nicky Hayden in serious condition in hospital

American MotoGP rider and past series champion Nicky Hayden is reportedly in serious condition in an Italian hospital after being injured in a car-bike accident in Italy on Wednesday.

According to RiminiToday the popular 35-year-old American, now competing in his second season of World Superbike with Ten Kate Honda, was struck by a auto while training on his bicycle.

The Red Bull Honda rider received some medical attention before being transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The extent of the Red Bull Honda man's injuries are yet to be determined but a team spokesman confirmed to BSN that the accident had occurred.

"We would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and messages of support and the assistance of emergency and medical services".
