Across Scotland, in an echo of the Glasgow council result, there appeared a number of extraordinary Tory gains.

The SNP is hoping to oust Labour from power in Glasgow City Council - Scotland's largest local authority - where their rivals have been in charge since the authority was set up more than 20 years ago.

"I think Labour really have a lot of soul searching to do, not just because of the result in Glasgow but due to their results across the country".

The breakdown of total votes cast and percentages achieved by parties in last week's local elections is a useful guide to the political mood.

She added: "Let's take the Tory argument at face value".

Susan Aitken reveals that she and her deputy, David McDonald, were in informal contact with COSLA ahead of the elections, and that further talks are now scheduled to put the reconciliation on a formal footing.

The Tories gained 36.1 per cent of the vote, up from 31.1 per cent in 2015, while the SNP saw their share fall sharply from 49.5 per cent to 31.6 per cent.

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said the selection of Mr McDougall shows that her party is "fighting hard to deliver a Labour government on the side of working people". Barrhead, in East Renfrewshire, elected its first Conservative councillor in 25 years, as did Cumnock in East Ayrshire and the Western Isles.

"We will stand up for everyone who doesn't want a second referendum on independence".

That would mean a bigger majority for Theresa May but not necessarily the landslide some were expecting, said Prof Curtice, but he also cautioned against reading too much into the results.

"We denied the SNP a majority at Holyrood past year".

That said, the turnout last week was 46.9 per cent, some way short of what will be recorded in next month's general election.

"And as for the General Election, while you've always got to be careful about extrapolating from one election to another, the issue for Scotland becomes quite clearly focused".

Ruth Davidson was campaigning in the former First Minister's patch on Saturday, after last week's local elections left the Conservatives as the largest group on Aberdeenshire council.

"But the votes across the country all count and we'll be looking to be the largest party in terms of seats and votes after all the votes are counted today".

While the constituency boundaries for Westminster are slightly different, the Scottish Conservatives are keen to capitalise on the rise in support locally as the general election approaches.

That compares to the 394 seats the party won in 2012.

"Additionally, we will require any power-sharing administrations to protect jobs by opposing any compulsory redundancies. They will fight against Tory attempts to drive down living standards and will not be distracted by campaigning for a divisive second independence referendum".

With results available from eight of Scotland's 32 councils, the SNP have 69 councillors, with Nicola Sturgeon's party gaining four seats so far.

"In places such as Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, East Lothian, Inverclyde, Fife and elsewhere, the Tories are in a distant third place".

"It's clearer now than ever before that only Labour can defeat the SNP in vast swathes of Scotland".
