  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Marvel's 15th straight No. 1 opening

"2", which cost $200 million to make, is opening significantly higher than the first film in the franchise, which pulled in a $94-million haul with the arrival of its original spin on the superhero genre, complete with winking humor and a 1970s pop soundtrack.

The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Pom Klementieff as Mantis.

Worldwide revenues added another $123.8 million over the weekend, bringing its global total up to $282.6 million just 13 days after release. Every single one has gone to number one at the domestic box office its opening weekend. That income was nearly matched by Disney powerhouse Beauty and the Beast, which made $4.9 million domestically and $11.9 million internationally in its eighth weekend, taking its total to an eye-watering $1.186 billion.

While the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel probably won't be dethroned soon, next week does bring a challenger with Guy Ritchie's take on the Arthurian legend - King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

Man holding human head stabs store clerk; mother found dead
Police believe the stabbing is tied to the murder of a woman found dead in a home in the nearby town of Colton . Joshua Lee Webb, 36, allegedly walked into the Estacada Thriftway Harvest Market in OR on Sunday afternoon.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ended with five post-credits scenes with one of them being Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) sowing the seeds for the creation of Adam Warlock. This weekend the movie earned an estimated $124 million overseas after opening in several more major foreign markets including Korea, Russia and China. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is such a juggernaut that no other studio dared to premiere any movies on the same weekend.

DreamWorks Animation and Fox's "The Boss Baby" landed in third place with an estimated 6.2 million US dollars. Its worldwide gross to date is $283 million. Still, it falls far below The Avengers' $207.4 million debut in 2012, Avengers: Age of Ultron's $191.2 million mark in 2015 and last year's Captain America: Civil War debut of $179.1 million. It should come as no surprise that family films like The Boss Baby and Beauty and the Beast would perform well.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now playing!

"Beauty and the Beast", $11.9 million.
