New FBI director could be selected by end of week

That decision followed clashes over President Donald Trump, and the cancellation of an appearance by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos amid destructive student disturbances.

It ticks off a list of Cornyn's policy stances: He voted for DeVos for U.S. Education secretary and against expanding a children's health insurance program.

Cornyn's credentials include having served on the senate judiciary committee and as attorney general of Texas.

Also being considered for the job are attorney Alice Fisher, NY Court of Appeals Judge Michael Garcia, Virginia District Judge Henry Hudson, FBI special agent-in-charge Adam Lee, acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, former congressman and FBI special agent Mike Rogers, and former Homeland Security advisor Fran Townsend.

Senator John Cornyn is being considered as a replacement for James Comey, the former FBI Director who was sacked by President Donald Trump earlier this month.

Paul: U.S. Needs China to Exert More Pressure on North Korea
Despite these warnings from the U.S., North Korean officials have not shown any signs of stepping back from their nuclear tests. North Korea's latest missile test on Sunday failed a few seconds after launch.

"My suspicion is he may be ready for a new challenge; he's been in the Senate now for quite a while", said Vanderbilt University law professor Brian Fitzpatrick, who worked as Cornyn's special counsel on the Supreme Court nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito. Then-Sen. Barack Obama opposed same-sex marriage in 2006 as well, and didn't officially change his position for another six years.

"I think the process is going to go quickly", Trump said to pool reporters.

On Tuesday, following President Trump's dismissal of Director Comey, Cornyn tweeted: "Ds were against Comey before they were for him", referring to many Democrats frustration revolving Comey's statements made prior to the 2016 election about Hillary Clinton's private e-mail server. Texans elected Cornyn to the U.S. Senate in 2002 to fill the seat of retiring Senator Phil Gramm. You may recall that McConnell blocked a confirmation vote on Garland's appointment by then-President Obama to the Supreme Court past year.

Asked, during an interview on NBC's Meet The Press, whether it's the right time for Trump to pick an elected political official, Graham said no. "But these are not normal circumstances". Although Cornyn remained relatively neutral in last year's election, he hit Trump after video came out in which the presidential contender claimed he kissed women whenever he wanted and grabbed them by the crotch. "They continue to move through a series of highly qualified candidates, and it's obviously a huge priority for the President to make sure that we have someone that has the ability to administer the proper leadership to the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Cornyn has also occasionally criticized Trump - albeit gently.
