Lyft, Waymo ink self-driving car deal: NY Times

  • Google's Waymo self-driving division has won the first step in a court case against rival ride-hailing business Uber

Cars driving for ride-hailing service Lyft may soon sport lidar sensors alongside the pink logo and Amp dash display.

US ride services company Lyft and Waymo, an automotive business owned by Google parent Alphabet, have launched a self-driving vehicle partnership, bringing together two rivals to dominant ride-sharing service Uber Technologies.

"Lyft's vision and commitment to improving the way cities move will help Waymo's self-driving technology reach more people, in more places", said a Waymo spokesman. Autonomous vehicles are more of a trend now than simply a technological advancement.

Last week, Alsup referred Waymo's allegations against Uber to the US attorney's office for investigation. And the order wasn't a total win for Waymo. The judge did not order Uber to stop any of its research, however, other than not allowing Levandowski or any other Uber employee from using or consulting the allegedly stolen files.

A US judge on Thursday called for an investigation into allegations of trade secret theft that were raised in a court battle between Silicon Valley.

The high-stakes corporate espionage case revolves around Waymo's allegations that Uber's work on self-driving cars has been riding on trade secrets stolen by a former Waymo engineer, Anthony Levandowski.

Although details of the alliance between Waymo and Lyft were not released, the deal is expected to involve a pilot program in which consumers will ride in vehicles equipped with Waymo's self-driving system.

Alsup also ruled that Uber must by next month complete an investigation into the downloaded Waymo documents and provide Waymo with a comprehensive log of written and spoken communication between Uber and Levandowski regarding Lidar.

Google started out as more of a Uber partner, being the largest investor in the ride-hailing startup and powering its service with Google Maps.

But the ruling, made in a San San Francisco court, also said Waymo's alleged trade secrets had not been identified in Uber's self-driving technology.

Importantly, Alphabet's legal counsel and an expert will also be able to inspect any and all of Uber's current work with this specific type of lidar radar, regardless of whether that results in a prototype.

Waymo and Lyft announced Sunday that they're working together to launch self-driving auto pilots.
