At a press conference on Monday afternoon, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said the teen had consumed multiple caffeinated beverages, including a large diet Mountain Dew, a McDonald's cafe latte and an unidentified energy drink, within the 2 hour span before he became ill.

Schoolmates at Spring Hill High had said the 16-year-old had "chugged" the large bottle of energy drink before becoming ill during a lesson.

'Parents, please, talk to your kids about the dangers of these energy drinks.

"[Cripe] was totally against drugs, he was totally against alcohol", Watts added. We worry about their safety, their health, especially once they start driving. "We lost Davis from a totally legal substance - that any one of you can walk out of here today and stop at any store and get any one of those things".

Sean Cripe, Davis' father, also made an announcement, WLTX 19 reported.

Watts did not specify which energy drinks were consumed, but in general, a 24-ounce energy drink can contain as much as 500 milligrams of caffeine.

Sean Cripe said he hopes that if nothing else comes out of this, parents and kids will realize the dangers of caffeinated beverages.

"It wasn't a auto crash that took his life". He followed the soft drink with an energy drink, but the coroner didn't name which one.

It was ruled that the student died after his heart fell out of rhythm due to the amount of caffeine ingested into his system over such a short period of time.

A 2014 study found an estimated 73% of children consume some kind of caffeine each day.

The Mayo Clinic said in a March report that up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day "appears to be safe for most healthy adults".

Caffeine is a stimulant that can improve alertness and mood.

A caffeine overdose has been ruled the cause of death of a SC teenager last month, a state coroner reported on Monday. Severe symptoms can include high blood pressure, seizures and coma, according to the National Capital Poison Center.
