"If from here to October I see the opportunity to win in 2018, I will be more than happy to stay with the team".

FERNANDO ALONSO stormed out of the Spanish Grand Prix to play tennis after his McLaren suffered another breakdown.

"My intention or first priority is to race next year here", he said.

This is the first time Alonso has reached Q3 in 2017, but he believes another major step is needed from Honda to have any chance of fighting at the front.

Alonso finished 1.9 seconds slower than pole victor Lewis Hamilton, but he defied expectations by beating out all the other teams that can't compete with Hamilton's Mercedes and challengers Ferrari and Red Bull.

Alonso's MCL32 vehicle broke down at just the second corner.

Alonso only made it as far as the exit of Turn 2 on his first lap of the day when the rear tires locked and he was pitched into a spin, ending his running in the opening session.

"I feel confident that tomorrow, when we'll put everything together, we'll be in a more or less competitive position and hopefully we can be close to the others".

Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation and Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey also spoke at the opening ceremony. Such a broad sweep and scale of interlocking economic partnerships and investments is unprecedented in history.

"I don't think that 50 is enough", said Alonso when asked after qualifying if an extra 50bhp would allow him to be on pole. With two wins in four races, Vettel has a 13-point advantage over Hamilton in the standings.

The Spaniard has been dogged by problems in the opening four races of the season as McLaren and Honda have failed to give him a vehicle capable of competing.

Fernando Alonso said on Thursday he will get to keep the Indianapolis 500 vehicle that he races in later this month to add to his musem collection.

Hamilton gave Mercedes its 19th pole in 20 races, two weeks after F1 leader Vettel had broken its run at the Russian GP in a one-two with Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

"The team have brought a really great package here", he said.

Sporting a new funky nose to its Silver Arrows, Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas led both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Vettel wasn't pleased coming in behind the Mercedes, and put the burden on himself to get more out of his auto that has given Mercedes its first real challenge in years.

"We had an issue that turned out not to be a problem; I'm blind in that moment, I don't know what to do, so I listen to the engineers".
