  • Comey's firing: Trump frustration finally boiled into action

The host of The View on Thursday erupted over reports that Donald Trump barred the American press from a meeting with the Russian foreign minister and Russian ambassador in the Oval Office, with Joy Behar calling the move flat-out "treason".

"No, it was not", David S. Cohen, the former deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency, replied.

"Deadly serious Q: Was it a good idea to let a Russian gov photographer & all their equipment into the Oval Office?" He declined to elaborate when reached by phone.

The White House has tried to explain why the president felt the need to fire the director of the FBI at a critical junction in the FBI's investigation into the president's campaign, and the official line started crumbling under the weight of its own contradictions nearly immediately.

Mr. Comey's account, his answer to Mr. Trump's initial question apparently did not satisfy the president, the associates said.

In his post, Scherbak said that he had undergone all White House security checks.

White House officials had allowed Scherbak, described by the delegation as Lavrov's photographer, to record the meeting, claiming they didn't know he also works for TASS.

United States administrations often treat Oval Office meetings as a type of currency, dangling the prospect of a high-profile sit-down to gain leverage or concessions in negotiations.

A White House statement on Wednesday said Pence had stressed America's support for Ukraine's "territorial integrity" and expressed the need to "peacefully resolve the conflict".

Kislyak has figured prominently in a series of damaging stories for the administration. Kislyak in particular has featured in one of the new administration's most notable controversies, with national security adviser Michael Flynn forced to resign in February after misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with the ambassador past year.

"They tricked us", an angry White House official said. He added that White House rooms "are swept routinely" for listening devices.

Spicer, 45, joined the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1999.

After the meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry posted a photo of a smiling US President shaking hands with Lavrov on Twitter, along with video of Lavrov joking about Comey's firing.

The official also rejected security concerns about allowing Russian officials into the Oval Office, including Kislyak, who is widely considered to be a spy by U.S. intelligence officials. American journalists were not permitted to observe the meeting or even photograph the attendees before private talks, and they only learned of Kislyak's participation through photographs distributed by the Russian foreign ministry. He was angry that Comey had kept the Russian Federation investigation alive even though it was obviously just a bogus partisan smear, so out he went.

"Sean is actually on Navy Reserve duty, so you guys are stuck with me - today and tomorrow", Huckabee Sanders said as she opened Thursday's less formal, off-camera briefing, which is known as a "gaggle".

Trump said that Kissinger has been a long-time friend and that it has been an honor to go over the issues with the veteran diplomat.
