Garcia finds more good fortune at par-3 17th

  • Danny Willett presents Sergio Garcia with the Green Jacket

Garcia, with a spanking new green jacket in his wardrobe, certainly experienced a far different welcome this time around from the ones he has received in years past, when spectators cheered his dual water balls on the famed par-3 17th in 2013 after his notorious flap with Tiger Woods and taunted him mercilessly two years later.

Garcia played his first majors at the 1996 and 1998 British Opens as an amateur and turned professional at age 19 after being the low amateur at the 1999 Masters.

Garcia certainly couldn't believe it himself, as he wasn't totally sure it was in until the crowd reacted the way they did.

Scott, who became the youngest victor at the Players (aged 23) in 2004, believes the notoriously hard par-3 17th is one of many obstacles that will prevent a runaway leader.

But, Garcia, always solid with the irons, took advantage of Alice Dye's island of wonders, and knocked the ball home.

The Spaniard has had his share of success at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida in a tournament he has won, but where he also endured one of his worst collapses.

In an event that sees Jason Day as the defending champion, world No 1 Dustin Johnson attempting land his fourth win in five events and newly-married Rory McIlroy trying out his new clubs in the heat of battle for the first time, Russell Knox and Martin Laird are bidding to mark the 30th anniversary of Sandy Lyle's win by landing another Scottish
success this weekend.

In his 20-years on the PGA Tour, Garcia certainly appears to have matured, and the perception of him has come from fans and media who weren't part of his inner circle.

Masters champion Sergio Garcia enjoyed a four-week celebration after his Augusta triumph highlighted by the ceremonial kick-off at El Clasico in Madrid, but he gets back to business on Thursday at The Players Championship.

"There have been so many things going on and maybe I would have loved to play something before this week to come here a little more relaxed".

Queensland veteran Rod Pampling, 47, made the two-over cut on the number after a 74.

But it is back to work now at a tournament many consider the most prestigious outside the four majors.

He added: "I'm much better with my left foot and I'm actually pretty close to being ambidextrous".

Garcia was very relaxed during his press conference on Wednesday, befitting someone who finally shed the label of best player not to have won a major when he beat Justin Rose in a Masters playoff 31 days ago.
