Back on TV, Kimmel zings critics of his health care plea

  • Sen. Patty Murray D-Wash. second from right accompanied by from left Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer of N.Y. left Sen. Chris Murphy D-Conn. and Sen. Ron Wyden D-Ore. speaks to the media on Capitol Hill in Washington Tuesday

Kimmel explained that the New York Post and Washington Times have both called him out as an "out-of-touch Hollywood elitist creep" since his plea for accessible health care. "When I was a kid, we had to drink powdered milk because we couldn't afford the liquid".

In response to conservatives in the media who labeled Kimmel an elitist, the comedian joked that it had been his dream "to become an out of touch Hollywood elitist, and I guess it came true".

"I'd like to apologize for saying that children in America should have health care", a sarcastic Kimmel offered. But he did galvanize the conversation surrounding pre-existing conditions, leading at least one Senator-Republican Bill Cassidy-to say that he would only support an Obamacare replacement bill when it comes to the Senate if it passes the "Jimmy Kimmel Test".

"You're on the right track", Cassidy responded.

Harrington praised Cassidy for being adept at taking a compelling story in the media, created to make Republicans look bad, and flipping it back on the other side to show that they are implementing those policies in their bill.

Kimmel, who welcomed his second child with wife Molly McNearney in April, spoke emotionally on air a week ago about the open heart surgery baby William John "Billy" Kimmel had to have at three days old.

He said the "Jimmy Kimmel test" should be that "no family should be denied medical care, emergency or otherwise, because they can't afford it".

US approves heavier weapons for Syrian Kurds
Those forces could eventually push forward to the northern strip of Syria, extending the area controlled by the Kurds. Though Mattis met with Turkish officials, he did not tell them of the decision to arm the Kurds, a USA official said.

He added that he hopes "common sense will prevail" as the plan moves forward. He said the influx of "so much kindness (and) so much compassion" was hard to process but acknowledged "there were also some not-so-nice things that people said online about me, including members of the media".

"And not only is Newt Gingrich an expert on sick babies - it turns out he also knows a thing or two about the late-night comedy business", the Oscars host went on to say."OK, yes, please tell us the problem we have with humor in America today ..."

Jimmy Kimmel on Monday laid out a simple test for the GOP healthcare bill. The trained physician had said on CCN last week that health care should be measured by what he called the "Jimmy Kimmel test".

Kimmel suggested that one way to pay for it was to first not give tax cuts to millionaires, and "leave it how it is".

"Well said, Jimmy. That's exactly why we fought so hard for the ACA, and why we need to protect it for kids like Billy. Now, I take that as a metaphor", he told host Greta van Susteren. "Can that be the Jimmy Kimmel test?"

"If you take the most prominent Republican politician, Donald Trump, he has that he actually wants all to be covered, wants to take care of preexisting conditions, without mandates, Americans hate mandates, and lastly, maybe most importantly, he wants to lower premiums", Cassidy said.
