  • Suspect loses control of car after chase and escape from Pottawattamie jail

After the shooting, Carmenaty fled the scene in the prisoner transport vehicle, crashing through the west door of the jail on his escape, authorities said, During his flight, he tried to carjack the driver of a pickup truck, confronting the driver and shooting him, before fleeing the scene again in the van.

Correa-Carmenaty is the inmate who escaped custody Monday and is accused of fatally shooting Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Burbridge in a brief but violent flight that saw two other people injured, including another deputy.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said Wednesday that a public defender for Correa-Carmenaty says he will waive an extradition hearing in court Thursday. If that happens, Kleine said they will dismiss charges in Douglas County and Correa-Carmenaty will return to Iowa, where he'll face first-degree murder and other charges.

Funeral arrangements have been announced for a western Iowa sheriff's deputy shot to death earlier this week in what officials say was a jail break by a man who had just been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Danker said Omaha police started its pursuit of the suspect at that time. He later carjacked a female motorist and led police on a chase from the Iowa jail into Omaha, Neb., with speeds reaching 80 miles per hour, according to the paper.

Correa-Carmenaty had pleaded guilty in January to voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder and two counts of robbery in connection with the slaying of 22-year-old Anthony Walker, according to the Associated Press.

Family begins healing, focus turns to ex-officer's sentence
It is essential that law enforcement and our community see the federal government address such an important aspect of this case. SC prosecutors had planned to retry Slager, but as part of Tuesday's plea bargain, they agreed to drop the murder case.

Police quickly located Correa-Carmenaty, and a high-speed chase ensued before he crashed the vehicle into a wall at Cuming Street and an Interstate 480 entrance ramp.

The shooting killed deputy Mark Burbridge, who was a 12-year veteran at the sheriff's office.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker says 23-year-old Wesley Williams Correa-Carmenaty attacked and shot the two deputies who were driving inmates back from court Monday. "Carmenaty assaulted both deputies, grabbed one of the guns, and shot them both", he said. "We are really going to miss him", said Danker.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the shooting, while Council Bluffs police are investigating the carjackings. This followed a lengthy trail of criminal activity that all began at the Pottawattamie County Jail.

Iowa's Pottawattamie County prosecutors indicated they preferred to pursue their charges, which also include kidnapping. If convicted on the pending charges in Iowa, the sentence would be life in prison, Wilber said.
