  • Deadly storms rip through America's Midwest

Abbott toured the area Sunday and activated the Texas Task Force 1 and 2 teams to help.

Several people were killed and dozens were injured in the Midwest and Texas on Saturday where tornadoes and floods severely stroke both states.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Fox says at least one tornado hit Canton, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Dallas.

The latest National Weather Service assessment indicates as many as five tornadoes tore through the northeastern part of the state Saturday, and that number could still rise.

"It is heartbreaking and upsetting to say the least", Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett told reporters at a news conference.

In Arkansas, six confirmed deaths didn't include the two missing children who were inside a truck with their mother on Saturday when the vehicle was swept off a bridge near Hindsville, about 130 miles northwest of Little Rock. "This afternoon I declared a State of Emergency for Arkansas to ensure that we have in place available resources to assist counties affected by last night's storms". And on Saturday, a 72-year-old woman drowned after her vehicle was swept away by floodwaters. Deadly severe storms including tornadoes swept through several small towns in East Texas, leaving a trail of overturned vehicles, mangled trees and damaged homes, authorities said Sunday.

"One thing we learned through the Van tornado (in 2015) when something like this happens, it's bigger than what you are", Kirkpatrick said.

Flooding is also an issue in northern Arkansas, where numerous roads are closed after more than 3 inches of rain fell in some areas.

High water in Missouri on Monday forced about 330 roads to close, including a stretch of Interstate 44 near Rolla, the state transportation department said on its website.

Storms ravaged the Midwestern and southern states over the weekend and continued to the eastern seaboard on Monday.

In Arkansas, a 10-year-old was found dead after being swept away in floodwaters. They included a Florence, Alabama, woman struck by a falling tree on Sunday, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. First responders from across the state went door to door on Sunday to look for survivors in more than 5,000 homes in the tornado's path, she said.

Four people are believed to have died in storm-related incidents in the state.

She said a shelter is being opened at First Methodist Church Life Center, 600 S. Buffalo, Canton, and a command triage center had been set up in Van Zandt County, but the Red Cross was having a hard time getting its volunteers there.

A total of 93 evacuations and 33 water rescues were reported Saturday, Gov. Eric Greitens said.
