These sales meet with Sony's goal to sell 60 million units by March this year, after reaching 50 million back in December.

PlayStation 4 may have given Sony a welcome nudge upwards in its latest financial results, but the company is warning that sales are likely to slow in the year ahead.

The report also sheds light on other numbers for example console sales from the previous fiscal quarter were 2.9 million which is up from 2.3 over the same period past year. The increase in revenue and profit was mainly attributable to a jump in PS4 software sales, including sales through the network, with PS4 hardware sales adding to the tally as well.

Just a year ago, the company announced that they were phasing out the standard PS4s and introducing the PS4 Slim instead.

Sony reported Friday that its quarterly sales rose 4.4% to 1.9 trillion yen (£13 billion). That is down from 9.7 million PS4 shipments in the previous quarter, though still higher than the 2.3 million it shipped in the final quarter of past year. It had sales of 1,649 billion yen and operating income of 135.6 billion yen, compared with 684 billion yen and operating income of 69.3 billion yen a year earlier.

As it stands, Sony isn't expecting to repeat that performance in the next financial year, but is still hopeful of selling another 18 million consoles by the time FY17 draws to a close on March 31, 2018.

Sony shipped 20 million PS4s last financial year as per its latest earnings report.

Last fiscal year, the chip business booked 7.8 billion yen in operating losses due to the impact of a series of earthquakes in Kumamoto Prefecture, southern Japan, in April. In the previous fiscal year, the company posted shipments of 24.9 million units. During a meeting, the company told its shareholders that it expects to see revenue increase by 5.2 percent over the course of this year. The Switch has already sold almost 3 million units and Microsoft has yet to release the Scorpio.
