  • Jimmy Wales Launches Wikitribune to Fight Fake News

Fake news emerged as a serious issue during last year's U.S. election campaign, when clearly fraudulent stories circulated virally on social media, potentially swaying some voters.

That's the lofty promise of Wikitribune, a new "living, breathing tool" launched by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales that he hopes will combat "fake news" by teaming ace journalists with citizen volunteers.

The new site seemingly is going to be different than WikiNews, the Wikimedia Foundation's free longtime crowdsourced news site. The site will cover traditional news beats, such as United Kingdom and global politics, as well as science, technology and specialist subjects chosen by subscribers.

The project is going to be crowdfunded, and in bringing together professional journalists with a community of supporters it aims to cover everything from politics to technology. The publication plans to pay their reporters through a crowdfunding campaign. "We're getting people to sign up as monthly supporters, and the more monthly supporters we have the more journalists we can hire".

Although Facebook has recently revealed its plans to pay fact-checkers to monitor news on its site, Wales said that the goal of Wikitribune is to be more than another fact checking service. "There are a variety of people who - if it does this right - will view it as a trusted platform", Joshua Benton, director of Harvard University's Nieman Journalism Lab, told the BBC. We need people from across the political spectrum to help identify bogus websites and point out fake news. So not only do we not know what the output of Wikitribune would be, we don't even know how much output there would be.

Hawks use balanced scoring to even series with Wizards
Kent Bazemore also turned in a solid performance off the bench with 16 points and tied for the team lead with seven assists. The Hawks now trail the best-of-seven series 2-1 but will look to even the series Monday night at Philips Arena .

Some experts as skeptical, saying the site may only appeal to journalists and people who read a lot of news.

"The news is broken and we can fix it", reads the website of the project unveiled by Mr Wales late Monday, describing itself as focused on "evidence-based journalism".

Wikipedia remains a fountain of knowledge for millions with its free, open source online encyclopaedia and legions of volunteer editors making sure everything that can be thought of is accounted for.

And, today, Facebook has announced their own efforts at helping you validate news by presenting related links to stories so you can check sources a little more easily.

Since WikiTribune won't be allowing advertisements on their website, that means that they won't be chasing clicks and page views on their website, which means no click bait headlines and no sponsored content.
