President Trump wants to send a manned space flight to Mars during his time in office - which is about a decade faster than most estimates say is possible.

Whitson replied, saying, "It's actually a huge honor to break a record like this. And it's really not as bad as it sounds", Ms Whitson said. "I'm glad to hear that".

"Better you than me", Trump deadpanned in response. Her current mission launched in November, and though it originally was scheduled to return home in June, is now scheduled to last until September.

While Whitson has broken the American record, the world record for cumulative time in space is still held by cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, who spent 879 days in space over his career.

Last month, astronaut Peggy Whitson performed her eighth spacewalk outside the ISS, setting the record for most spacewalks by a woman.

Whitson also explained to Trump how technology in the space station allows astronauts to convert their urine to drinking water.

Behind her, a banner read: "Congrats Peggy!" "So it's a very exciting time to be at NASA". And with the recent extension of her stay at the International Space Station, she will accumulate even more time.

Whitson and those at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center said it takes inspiration from today's students to get us where we're going.

And Chargepoint , the largest operator of electric-vehicle charging stations, will figure out how to top off the batteries. Along with Dubai, the flying taxi service will also be tested in Dallas-Fort Worth if everything goes according to plan.

President Donald Trump called NASA astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) Monday to congratulate them for breaking a record.

In another humorous aside, Trump mused that he'd like Whitson and Fischer to help figure out a faster timetable for getting to the Red Planet.

The debut of the mega rocket is still more than a year away-at least.

Whether or not it's 2024, and whether it's Mars or the moon, Trump has made clear how much he wants to see a dramatic space mission during his administration.

She said she used a device the size of a mobile phone for the job, and noted that such sequencing can detect microbes aboard spacecraft and monitor astronaut health.

"That's fantastic", Mr Trump said.

This is Whitson's third long duration trip aboard the International Space Station.
