Type with your brain? Facebook's working on it

  • Facebook's Sci-Fi Plan for Typing with Your Mind and Hearing with Your Skin

Ms Dugan is the company's head of Building 8, the firm's hardware research lab. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg delivered the opening keynote at the F8 Developer Conference that runs through April 19.

Facebook Building 8 creators also worked with Braille - tiny bumps on paper that can be "read" by users without sight.

But Facebook signaled that it had widespread ambitions previous year when Dugan was hired and her new secret research lab, Building 8, was announced alongside hundreds of millions in funding.

That is why we love great writers and poets, because they are just a little bit better at compressing the fullness of a thought into words. To develop its brain interface system, for instance, Facebook would need non-invasive sensors that can measure brain activity quickly and accurately through hair, skin, and the human skull.

Initially, their goal is to allow people to type 5 times faster than people can type on a smartphone straight from their brain.

Video played during her presentation showed a woman with an advanced neurodegenerative disease using her mind to move a cursor on a computer screen, slowly typing words.

Dressed in a dark Steve Jobs-like turtleneck, Dugan announced Wednesday that Facebook has a team of 60 people working on a computer interface powered by the human brain. "A silent speech interface - one with all the speed and flexibility of voice".

Brighton & Hove Albion: From the brink of disaster to the Premier League
You can't guarantee anything, but we did as much as we could. "We're all a team of friends and that's what gets us to where we are".

"Technology is going to have to get a lot more advanced before we can share a pure thought or feeling, but this is a first step". This is about decoding the words you've already chose to share by sending them to the speech center of your brain.

"Optical imaging is a good place to start", she said wryly, before adding that part of the research required "filtering for quasi-ballistic photons".

It would also have the potential to capture concepts and semantics associated with words people are thinking, making language differences irrelevant by enabling sharing of what is in mind, Dugan said. Even a simple yes/no "brain click" would help make things like augmented reality feel much more natural.

Secretive though it has been, Building 8 has been known to be working on neural technology for some time, its basic objective having been revealed by jobs postings, including for neuroscientists for "inception to product" design on a 2-year turn around. Since then many techniques have emerged that illustrate our brain's ability to reconstruct language from components. Think of a "brain mass for augmented reality", she said.

Dugan was careful to head off concerns about the abuse of brain-reading technology. But what Facebook is proposing is perhaps more radical-a world in which social media doesn't require picking up a phone or tapping a wrist watch in order to communicate with your friends; a world where we're connected all the time by thought alone. "We are wired to communicate and connect". With Project: Hear With Your Skin, work begins by developing and building the hardware and software Facebook will need to "delivery language through the skin".

Before joining Google, Dugan ran the Defense Department's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, devoted to developing technology for the U.S. military.
