The 2018 Subaru Ascent Could Be Your Posh, Tough & Bulky SUV

  • Subaru Ascent Concept

Even the name will be carried over, with Subaru confirming this week at the New York International Auto Show that its upcoming model will be named the Ascent.

Now, this isn't Subaru's first adventure into the three-row crossover game, but the company would rather not talk about the ill-fated Tribeca. Despite a 117.0-inch wheelbase and 78.3-inch width that closely parallel the dimensions of the Viziv-7, the Ascent measures 198.8 inches nose to tail, making it roughly a half foot shorter. Less glitzy than the showcar before it, the Ascent concept seems to be nearly production-ready on the outside, and dare we say it's more attractive than the Viziv-7.

Dimensionally, the Ascent concept is smaller than the massive Viziv-7.

Subaru also unveiled the updated 2018 Outback at the 2017 New York Auto Show.

Cavs avoid collapse, hold off Pacers
Cleveland's more predictable offense made defense easier for the Pacers , who got stops more consistently than they did all game. James knocked down 12 of his 20 shots from the field, including two of his three looks from three-point range.

Subaru has said the Ascent's engine is "all new" and has direct injection and turbocharging, making it likely to be a higher-displacement derivative of the 2.0-litre BRZ engine, perhaps expanded to 2.4-litres or 2.5-litres. It's unclear just how much power that engine will make.

The production version of the Ascent will arrive next year and will be built in IN, according to Tom Doll, president and chief operating officer of Subaru USA.

Still, it's a handsome SUV, and Subaru continues to sell well to a devoted audience.

The Ascent will be built in Lafayette, Ind., and is exclusive to the North American market. Other details will be released closer to the on-sale date.
