Trump commented that the children invited to take part in the event were "highly, highly competitive".

President Donald Trump celebrated the 2017 White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, continuing a 139-year-old tradition in Washington, D.C.

The children attending the event, some wearing red caps with Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again" on them, took part in the race and egg hunt, decorated cookies, wrote thank-you letters to USA soldiers and participated in other fun activities. And I don't know if we're going to be successful, but I know a lot of people down there are going to be successful.

"I got to do the egg hunt, and I found the golden egg!" said Connor Clinkscale. He wore the outfit himself in 2008 during the George W Bush administration. They later signed decorated cards for the military. Trump took the hat, signed it, and then threw it back into the crowd with a big smile. For a couple of minutes today, the president sat at a picnic table with his wife Melania, son Barron, and other children, where they used markers to write notes to active duty service members.

POLITICO also reported that White House officials "have gone out of their way to lower expectations;" where former President Barack Obama had 37,000 attendees for his last Easter Egg Roll, press secretary Sean Spicer reported a guest list of 16,000 less.

And tech companies that showed little support for Trump during the campaign also gave hundreds of thousands to the committee. The Las Vegas Review-Journal, owned by Adelson, became the first major newspaper to endorse Trump for president in 2016.

Planning for the massive annual event began later than usual this year, prompting questions about whether the event was going to happen at all.

"This is my first year doing the egg roll, and it's been a really good experience and I would encourage my friends to get their parents to try and get in the lottery to do it", said Easter Egg Roll attendee Abby Shygelski.
