  • Chicago Bulls forward Jimmy Butler catches a pass high above Chicago Bulls guard Isaiah Canaan during the second quarter of a first-round NBA playoff basketball game in Boston Tuesday

Jimmy Butler comes up big for the Chicago Bulls, scoring 22 points along with Rajon Rondo being one rebound shy of a triple-double in their 111-97 win over the Boston Celtics. When the Bulls clinched the eighth and final spot in the East on the final night of the season with a 39-point win over the Nets, Rondo was in full stride. Center Robin Lopez added 18 and rookie Paul Zipser finished with 16 points.

Game 3 is in Chicago on Friday night as the Celtics face the possibility of not playing in front of their home fans again this season. The Celtics studied more than their normal amount of film in an effort to keep the Bulls from cleaning the offensive glass.

Isaiah Thomas put up 33 points and six assists, playing a day after his sister was killed in a vehicle accident.

Jimmy Butler saw to it that Celtics' talisman Isaiah Thomas, who will fly to Washington to attend his sister's funeral on Wednesday, was not able to get going offensively.

Chyna Thomas died early Saturday in a one-car accident outside Tacoma, Wash. The Celtics, to their credit, have made clear that they support Thomas and he should take the time he needs, even if it means missing games. Since steals became an official statistic in 1973-74, the only players with three such games are Rondo and Jordan.

Thomas was again unavailable to the media after the game.

The Bulls were plus-17 in total rebounds, including a 20-12 edge in offensive boards that lead to 23 second-chance points. Thomas had 33 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in 38 minutes.

Though Butler is at the heart of everything the Bulls do, Tuesday night was about Rajon Rondo. "I think we did everything we wanted tonight". Games 3 and 4 are in Chicago and it's hard to see the Celtics winning four of five games to pull this thing out.

"We've obviously moved past what happened at that time, but we, I think, had lost five out of six or had a very poor stretch, so we needed to inject the pace back into the lineup", Hoiberg said.

"We just need to continue to fight for him". You can expect Boston to do a much better job of limiting Portis as he had the game of his life as he scored 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting with 9 rebounds.

Odds are that Boston will regroup and take Game 2 at home, but their attention to detail in regards to boxing out must be paramount. Now, the team looks perhaps the best it has at any point this season.
