White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said on Monday that President Trump's 2016 tax returns are under audit and will not be released.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday issued a number of tweets in a bid to play down a number of protests across the country demanding the release of his tax returns.

Presidents and Vice Presidents are automatically subjected to tax audits by the IRS as a matter of routine practice - a fact that has not stopped previous holders of those offices from publicly releasing their returns.

Mike Pence says during a vice presidential debate with Democratic candidate Tim Kaine that Trump has not "broken his promise" about releasing tax returns.

However, multiple polls have found that the majority of Americans want Trump to release his tax returns.

"I did what was an nearly an impossible thing to do for a Republican-easily won the Electoral College!" he tweeted. And I also know this: He doesn't care at all.

Trump appeared again on Hewitt's radio program and said of his returns, "we'll get them out at some point, probably". "‶He needs to show us his tax returns so that we can tell who's influencing his decisions, who he owes money to, who he's doing business with - really so we can figure out whether he needs to be impeached".

Russian Federation must explain possible role in chemical attack, top Trump adviser says
During the session, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley defended the US's action and said it is prepared to do more. He had planned to travel to Russia Monday on a trip meant to start a fresh dialogue with Moscow.

The process for auditing the return of the president and vice president is very precisely spelled out in the manual, including the instruction that their returns must be filed in an orange folder. Being under audit does not prohibit tax returns from being released. The issue of the president's no-show on his tax returns touches on a variety of accountability issues.

"Show us your taxes" reads a sign at the New York City tax day protest Saturday.

But Democrats have said they will oppose any tax reform bill until they know how the measure will affect the billionaire president and his family. His next tweet offers a clue: "Someone should look into who paid for the small organized rallies yesterday".

Trump and his administration initially said they couldn't release the tax documents until an ongoing audit of his finances had been completed by the Internal Revenue Service.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of MA said Tuesday morning that the issue was not dead.

When Congress returns from its recess next week, the president will face his next legislative battle and rewrite the tax code.
