Record-breaking debut for newest 'Fast and Furious' flick

Simultaneous release in China has resulted in great advantage for the latest instalment of the "Fast & the Furious" series.

The film, directed by F. Gary Gray of Straight Outta Compton fame, also features Charlize Theron, Tyrese Gibson and hip-hop star Ludacris.

The Force Awakens opened to a staggering ($529) £421m worldwide in December 2015, beating the previous record holder Jurassic World by a long shot.

For all its strong showing, Fast & Furious 8 earned almost a third less in its first North American weekend than Fast & Furious 7, which drew US$147.2 million.

The Force Awakens, meanwhile, wasn't released in China until January 9, 2016, roughly three weeks after it premiered in places like the USA and United Kingdom in 2015.

"There is no market that hasn't had a strong reception", said Duncan Clark, Universal's president of worldwide distribution.

Another big difference between the two films: Fewer females in North America turned out to see Furious 8 on opening weekend.

In Malaysia, the movie has generated US$6.8 million for its opening weekend - which is equal to RM29.9 million - since its release last week.

Man sought in Cleveland Facebook killing is dead
He also posted several Facebook Live videos bragging about an unconfirmed claim that he'd killed at least a dozen other people. Regarding the chilling video, Williams said Tuesday, "This is something that should not have been shared around the world".

Nick Carpou, Universal's domestic distribution chief, added: "We're riding very high".

"Fate of the Furious" brings back the most hilarious characters and fan favorites.

The Fate of the Furious is now screening in cinemas and features Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Charlize Theron, Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Luke Evans.

Chinese filmgoers are devouring action movies, allowing studios to keep churning out explosion-filled blockbusters without worrying too much about whether fatigue is setting in for US audiences.

"It is a franchise that has adapted and changed over the years and is as relevant in 2017 as it was in 2001", noted Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for comScore. There, The Fate of the Furious had the biggest three-day opening weekend of all-time with an estimated $190 million.

As for the rest of the box office, far behind in second place was DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox's "Boss Baby", with $15.5 million in its third week.

Smurfs: The Lost Village and Going in Style close out the top five, respectively. The family flick has packed its domestic crib with $116.3 million to date.
