  • The girl was surfing with her father when she was attacked and was taken to Esperance Hospital in critical condition

The 17-year-old girl, who has not been named, was unconscious when she was pulled from the water near Esperance in Western Australia after the attack this afternoon.

She was rushed in critical condition to a hospital, where she died.

Police later confirmed she had died from her injuries, tweeting their condolences and describing the attack as "devastating". Nine News said the girl's mother alerted emergency services and that a beachgoer performed CPR for 30 minutes until paramedics arrived.

It's the first fatal shark attack this year in WA.

Authorities closed Wylie Bay Beach until further notice.

NYC Uber drivers could soon start getting tips
The entire process would be handled with a few taps of an app, paid through a credit card, without an obligation to tip. In a statement, Uber said they have not yet seen the proposal, but look forward to reviewing it.

The Esperance Express reported that the Department of Fisheries will patrol the beach and water from early Tuesday morning.

Police said the victim, whose name was not released, was from Mandurah, which is near Perth, and she was on vacation with her family.

The Australian teen was hitting the waves with her dad in Esperance when the shark latched onto her and grabbed her, according to the Associated Press.

Surfer Sean Pollard, then 23, lost his arm and his other hand in a shark attack at the same beach in 2014. Australia has an average of less than two deadly shark attacks per year.
