The hope, he said, is that "we can navigate a political outcome in which the Syrian people, in fact, will determine Bashar al-Assad's fate and his legitimacy".

On Friday, hours after the United States missile strike, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Western allegations were "bogus".

During the session, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley defended the US's action and said it is prepared to do more.

Saudi Arabia, one of the most vehement opponents of Assad, said the missile barrage was the right response to "the crimes of this regime to its people in light of the failure of the worldwide community to stop it". Despite intense worldwide pressure, Assad has clung to power since a civil war broke out in his country six years ago, helped by financial and military support from both Russian Federation and Iran.

"We know there's not any sort of option where a political solution is going to happen with Assad at the head of the regime", she said on CNN.

"The U.S. response to the chemical attack was rather mild-we targeted the unit which we think was involved, we didn't take out runway", he says.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has cancelled a scheduled visit to Moscow next week, his office announced on Saturday, saying "developments in Syria have changed the situation fundamentally".

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, further said an unmanned aircraft belonging to either Russian Federation or Syria was spotted hovering over the site of the chemical incident after it happened.

The statement praised what it described as "the courageous decision" by Trump and said it holds the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad responsible for the military strikes.

He had planned to travel to Russia Monday on a trip meant to start a fresh dialogue with Moscow.

Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov expressed his views to American secretary of state Rex Tillerson in their first telephone conversation since the strikes on an airbase near Homs. Tuesday's chemical attack left scores dead, including children and women, according activists.

General Valery Gerasimov and Major General Mohammad Bagheri spoke by phone and "condemned the American operation against a Syrian airbase which is an aggression against an independent country", Iran's state news agency IRNA said.

Rouhani said the US strike would not affect Iran's Syria policy, while Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran would not withdraw in the face of such aggressions. "So, yes, I'm skeptical", she said.

The strike put Russian Federation in a hard situation, facing surprising assertiveness which it did not expect from the U.S.in Syria, least of all from a president that spent the better part of the a year ago dreaming about cooperating with Russian Federation in Syria.
