Iran's president resisters to run in May elections

  • The race to be Iran's next president kicks off

Before Ahmadinejad chose to run, many believed the election would be won by incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, who negotiated the nuclear deal with world powers in 2015.

"Iran is a powerful country and people like Mr. Trump or the United States administration can not hurt Iran", Ahmadinejad said in an interview with The Associated Press (AP).

Thank you! Your submission has been received!

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Friday that he would seek re-election in the May 19 election.

Eight women have registered, even though no woman has ever been approved previously.... The average Iranian still hasn't seen the benefits of the nuclear deal, which saw some global sanctions lifted in exchange for Iran limiting its uranium enrichment.

Iran may see its first female candidate for president next month as more than 600 people, including a man with five wives, throw their hat in the ring to try and replace Hassan Rouhani.

In March 2016, he was appointed by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to head Astan Qods Razavi, a charitable foundation overseeing the Imam Reza shrine, as well as a huge business conglomerate with interests in everything from IT and banking to construction and agriculture.

Many Iranians have grown impatient with the slow rate of improvement in their economic fortunes since sanctions were lifted.

Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has also lambasted Trump in a double attack on the USA commander-in-chief. "I am urging all Iranians to vote for Iran and for Islam", the 68-year-old told reporters.

He will face frontrunner Ebrahim Raisi, who also registered on Friday, and is close to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

The incumbent president said safeguarding the landmark 2015 nuclear deal is one of the most important issues for the Iranian nation and opponents of the deal are not well-placed to take charge of its implementation, alluding to his conservative opponents.

Rouhani has vowed to remain loyal to the nuclear deal.

Associated Press journalists said election officials were "stunned" when he submitted his paperwork against the supreme leader's warning, but Mr Ahmadinejad said the words were "just advice". While Khamenei has final say on all state matters, Ahmadinejad's relationship with him had strained by the end of his time in power. The benefits have yet to trickle down to the average Iranian, however, fueling some discontent.

A third prominent contender is the former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The 1988 massacre gained new prominence in Iranian public discourse past year when Ahmad Montazeri, the son of the only prominent regime official who opposed the killings, released an audio recording of his father's conversations with the leading players in the mass execution.
