Girls Series Finale - It's Underwhelming and Satisfying at the Same Time

Girlsaired a fantastic series finale.
You'd think that this episode being Girls series finale, we'd get more closure for every character. Grover exists as a screaming, crying way to thrust familiar characters into one final unfamiliarity.
JessaWhere We Left Her: The last we saw of Jessa, she was doing the mature thing and apologizing to Hannah for the entire Adam situation.
However, to long-time fans of the show, the series ended just how it should be. Had the writers chosen to go the completely traditional route, the show would also have felt just as unfinished as it did in the closing moments of "Latching".
God forbid though, that her Mom tell her that - which is precisely what Mama Horvath (Becky Ann Baker) comes upstate to do, at the behest of Marnie in the middle of the night.
As for whether or not this show could go the way of Sex and the City and Entourage and go into the realm of a feature film, we'd once again say that it's possible, but it would nearly go against the intimate nature of this show to move forward and throw these characters into something that was a little bit more bold and big.
It's too much for the girls. Part of this, I realize now, was because I was 23 when it premiered. I couldn't fit years of frustration at the show's emotional water-treading into each review, and so each gapes at the novel growth its characters achieve, and the incisiveness they bring when not forced to dick around in the same old self-defeating cycles. I had to, right?
"Yeah, I feel good about where [my character] Marnie is heading". "The overall theme of the show is the mistakes we go through when we're trying to find our footing", Girls costume designer Jennifer Rogien told the New York Times: "We wanted to embrace all those factors-the youth, the first job, the insecurity in relationships, both romantic and friendship- and see if we could reflect that through the clothing". It's her big epiphany that everything will be okay, that's it's hard as hell, but she can do it and she and Grover are going to be just fine. We knew that the baby's name was Grover Horvath before we knew that "Grover" was the fantasy name of [Hannah's] water-skiing f-buddy. Although Hannah is beginning a new chapter, the episode shows her in a kind of liminal space, inhabiting a pre-adulthood reality.
Her state of undress, though, made it "Girls".
"Latching", the series finale, was as fitting an ending as anyone could have asked for. I'm sure some of you will disagree (a friend just texted me, "That was bad.") But let's dig in. Time and again, those articles and blog posts and conversations circle back to the same question: Will they ever grow up? As the credits role, we hear her singing Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" - the song that Marnie was singing earlier in the auto - to the baby. The show's sex talk was only outstripped in frankness by its uncomfortably intimate sex scenes. ("Oh, Jesus Christ", says Hannah and the rest of the planet.) She argues that she's the best at being Hannah's friend, she loves Hannah the most, so she wins the prize of a Full House-esque future.
But Girls was also an incredibly ambitious show. Hannah then takes a trip down her new neighborhood.
What happens in "Latching" isn't almost as satisfying as the blunt and teary revelations of "Goodbye Tour".
"Let's face it, Grover f-cking hates me", Hannah tells her mom. The early scenes are disturbing in a Grey Gardens: The Next Generation kind of way, but the scenes that follow are true, and painful, and great. While the characters of Hannah, Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) aged, their problems largely stayed the same. And if he rejects her, Hannah feels (knows, in her mind) that it's her fault. Should they not breastfeed?'" And we were like, "We're the last f-ing people who have a f-ing opinion on what you should do with your body. Loreen snarls. "Fucking everyone". To see the true beauty of the episode, you must really look at the moments within. But the girl reveals herself to be an entitled brat, not unlike Hannah, who refuses how good she has it as a kid with parents who love her irrationally and just want her to have a happy life. The sound of Grover suckling runs over the end credits, along with bits of Hannah singing "Fast Car" to the kid. This made Hannahvery angry now that she's a mother herself.
"Latching" is, even for Girls, a disorienting and bleak episode.
