Researchers found 22.7 percent of these adults had strains of high-risk HPV, with 25.1 percent of men affected, compared with 20.4 percent of women. "People need to realize that this is a serious concern". On the other hand, Asians were the least affected ethnic group.

There are more than 150 HPV viruses.

Every year, 14 million new infections occur among teens and adults.

- It causes 99.4% of cervical cancer cases and 100% of genital warts cases.

"Collectively, these data demonstrate the significant and continued benefits of the HPV vaccination programme in Scotland, which has achieved a consistent and high uptake of around 90 per cent in 12 to 13-year-old girls". The researchers at the CDC are hoping to bring more awareness to HPV and to get screened. HPV infections among women have been much more widely studied given the strong link between HPV and cervical cancer, a connection that has been known for decades.

The report was published April 6 in the CDC's NCHS Data Brief.

Positive results of the study would offer women the opportunity to protect themselves and their sexual partners against potentially deadly HPV infection through the simple application of an low-priced, over-the-counter product. The HPV vaccine was first recommended for adolescent girls in the United States in 2006, and since then, the prevalence of the cancer-causing virus dropped among young women, a 2016 study found.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States.

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious-disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told ABC News that the report sheds light on one reason head and neck cancers were increasing. The prevalence of any oral HPV was 7.3%, while 4.0% had high-risk oral HPV. In total, the study included samples collected from over 20,000 women, making this one of the largest population-based studies to examine the impact of the vaccine.

The virus is transmitted from a person who carries the virus to another via sex, whether vaginal, anal or oral, and symptoms of the infection may not be visible right away. The program is newer for boys, however, and we expect this rate to increase over time.

She said: "These new findings indicate that the positive impact of the HPV vaccine may be even greater than we initially thought". Some people still think vaccination encourages youth to become promiscuous.

But that's exactly why physicians should be recommending the HPV vaccine to kids at that age.
