David Letterman's mom, Dorothy Mengering, who became an unlikely "Late Night" star by injecting her son's show with her brand of the midwestern sugary sweetness he grew up with, died Tuesday at her home in Carmel, Indiana. She also made remote appearances from her home on Thanksgiving, when Letterman would try to guess what kinds of pie she had made that year; winsomely delivered Top 10 lists, which usually razzed her son; and paid regular Mother's Day visits.
She attended Indiana University, and in 1942, she married florist Harry Joseph Letterman, who died of a heart attack in 1973.
"After Lillehammer, I couldn't believe how it all took off", Mengering told The New York Timesin 1996. "I will always be in hell until the day after, when I will go to hell". In 1998, they talked about the family and the weather before showcasing a few desserts she baked.
